Access & Logistics

An operational overview of air and ground logistics for corporate programs, detailing access constraints and our coordination role for seamless execution.

Submit a Brief

Madagascar's unique geography and developing infrastructure present significant logistical challenges that require expert planning. The success of any corporate program hinges on a realistic understanding of transport limitations and a robust, flexible operational plan. Vivy Corporate provides the critical on-the-ground intelligence and coordination to navigate these complexities, ensuring program objectives are met safely and efficiently.

Nearly all international and domestic travel is structured around a hub-and-spoke model centered on the capital, Antananarivo, and its international airport (TNR). This city serves as the primary gateway and the mandatory consolidation point for personnel, equipment, and onward distribution by air or road. Planning must account for this centralized flow.

Vivy Corporate orchestrates the complete logistical chain on behalf of our clients. We source, vet, and oversee all local transport providers—from airlines to 4x4 operators. Our role is to manage the relationships, confirm service levels in writing, and implement contingency plans, providing a single point of coordination for complex, multi-modal itineraries.

International Flights

Air Entry Points

The primary international gateway is Ivato International Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo. Major carriers typically connect through hubs in Paris (CDG), Addis Ababa (ADD), Nairobi (NBO), and Johannesburg (JNB). Flight schedules and carrier routes are subject to change and must be verified before program confirmation.

Visa & Documentation

Entry Requirements

A visa on arrival is typically available for most nationalities for tourism or business stays. Passports are generally required to be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. All visa and health requirements are subject to change and must be verified with the relevant Madagascar embassy or consulate before departure.

Operations Hub

Antananarivo Hub

Antananarivo serves as the operational base for nearly all corporate programs. We coordinate secure airport transfers and hotel arrangements upon arrival. It is standard operational practice to schedule an overnight in the capital before beginning onward domestic travel, providing a necessary buffer for flight delays and acclimatization.

Ground Network

Inter-Region Access

Region Air Access Ground Access Transfer Time from Tana
Eastern Corridor Eastern Region Flights to Toamasina (TMM) via Tsaradia from TNR · Charter available · Subject to schedule RN2 paved to Toamasina · Eastern forest access via 4x4 tracks ~45 min by air · 6–8h by road to Toamasina, conditions permitting
Northern Region Grand Nord Flights to Diego Suarez (DIE) via Tsaradia · Charter options · Subject to schedule RN6 — long haul, partially paved · 4x4 required beyond Diego ~1h 45 min by air · 24–36h by road, conditions permitting
Southern Region Le Grand Sud Flights to Toliara (TLE) and Fort Dauphin (FTU) via Tsaradia · Subject to schedule RN7 paved to Toliara · Beyond requires 4x4 · Some areas boat access ~1h 45 min by air · 20–24h by road to Toliara (typically a 2-day journey)
Northern Archipelago Nosy Be Archipelago Flights to Nosy Be (NOS) from TNR via Tsaradia · Subject to schedule Ferry from Ankify port · Speedboat options available ~1h 45 min by air · Road to Ankify + 45 min boat transfer
Western Region Western Madagascar Flights to Morondava (MOQ) via Tsaradia · Subject to schedule RN34/35 — unpaved sections · 4x4 required · Historically impassable Jan–Mar ~1h by air · 10–12h by road (dry season only)
Operational Constraints

What Affects Ground Access

Road Conditions The main national artery (RN7) is paved, but quality varies. Most secondary and regional routes are unpaved, typically require 4x4 vehicles, and can become seasonally impassable. We source real-time local intelligence for all route planning, as conditions can change rapidly.
Domestic Flight Schedules Tsaradia is the main domestic carrier, connecting TNR to key regional airports. Private charter flights offer greater flexibility. Domestic schedules are published seasonally and are subject to frequent operational adjustments; they must be reconfirmed before program finalization.
Remote Area Access Access to national parks, coastal regions, and the western corridor typically requires 4x4 vehicles. Certain archipelagos and remote lodges are accessible only by private boat or charter flights. Access methods are highly dependent on the season and recent weather events.
Wet Season Restrictions The wet season, historically from December to March, significantly impacts logistics. Unpaved roads may become impassable, and cyclone activity can disrupt air and road travel. Conditions vary year to year depending on rainfall and storm intensity.
Group Size Considerations Small groups (2-6) can utilize 4x4s. Medium groups may use a convoy of 4x4s or minibuses on paved routes. As large coach access is extremely limited outside of Antananarivo, larger groups often require a combination of vehicles or domestic charter flights.
Baggage & Equipment Domestic flights typically have a checked baggage allowance of 20kg and a cabin allowance of 5kg; these limits are often strictly enforced. Transporting specialized equipment requires advance coordination and may necessitate charter or dedicated freight solutions. Verify current allowances with the airline.
Border & Health Checks Standard immigration and customs procedures are in place at Ivato Airport (TNR). Health screenings can be implemented with little notice. While typically straightforward, clearance times vary; confirm current procedures before departure and factor in buffer time.
Emergency Evacuation Medical evacuation infrastructure varies significantly between Antananarivo and remote regions. Evacuation lead times depend on location, weather, and asset availability and are not guaranteed. All participants must have comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers medical evacuation from Madagascar, confirmed pre-trip.
How We Help

Our Logistics Role

01 Transfer Coordination

We coordinate all airport transfers through pre-vetted local transport providers. Our process includes driver briefings, vehicle quality checks, and real-time flight tracking to manage delays, ensuring a secure and efficient welcome and departure for all program participants.

02 Domestic Flight Booking

Vivy Travel Corporate orchestrates all domestic air travel, from sourcing availability on Tsaradia to arranging private charters. We manage the booking process, advise on schedule reliability, and coordinate ticketing for groups, subject to airline availability and operational changes.

03 Ground Transport

Ground transport is arranged through a network of vetted local operators. We specify the appropriate vehicle type for the planned itinerary, oversee driver briefings on safety and routing, and manage the contractual relationship to ensure service standards are met.

04 Contingency Planning

We build contingency options into every itinerary. This includes identifying alternative road routes, pre-positioning backup vehicles where feasible, and maintaining communication with air charter operators for rapid response to disruptions caused by weather or road conditions.
